Blessing Ceremony for the Waharoa

We had a wonderful ceremony last Friday to mark the blessing of our new waharoa, pictured above. We were particularly pleased to welcome our local MP, the Hon Annette King, Councillors Ray Ahipene-Mercer and Paul Eagle, as well as Apotoro Takiwa Bill Herbert, Minister of the Ratana Church, to officially bless the waharoa. Throughout the speeches, particular credit was given to Jake Yocum, our carver extraordinaire, for his wonderful work. The waiata were sung beautifully throughout the ceremony, this is in no small measure due to the great work of Rachel France.

Later in the day we were joined by families to celebrate Matariki – kapa haka groups, kai, star gazing…a wonderful event. I would particularly like to thank the parents involved for the organisation of the event and cooking of kai. Well done everyone.
